TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The relationship between Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri seems to be mending ties with former rivaling political party Gerindra as she plans to attend the party’s internal congress on September 2019.
This follows the attendance of Gerindra Party’s Chairman Prabowo Subianto at PDIP’s congress that was held in Bali on August 8. Prabowo was accompanied by his trusted members, Edhy Prabowo and Sugiono.
The PDIP congress not only accepted Prabowo as one of their own, his interaction with Megawati in the event seemed more than casual and was visually seen sharing jokes and gestured signs of respect for each other.
“Insyallah (God willing) we will invite Ibu Megawati and other political party leaders to the Gerindra national work meeting (Rakernas),” said Gerindra’s deputy secretary Andre Rosiade on Tuesday, August 13.
Andre argues that political ties must be maintained following a heated presidential election.
“Ibu Megawati gave a warm welcome for Prabowo at the PDIP congress, we will return that favor by greeting Megawati in the same way in September,” said the West Sumatran politician.
